Day 9: Educational Program and Learning Environment

Today, I focused on how the educational program and environment support learning. I contributed to setting up both indoor and outdoor environments, considering the developmental needs of children. I assisted in implementing a small group art project that aligned with children's interests and extended their fine motor and cognitive skills. I also discussed planning cycles with my supervisor.

Stimulating and Nurturing Learning Environment

During my placement, I contributed to creating a learning environment that was both stimulating and nurturing, supporting each child's sense of belonging, curiosity, and development.

🧸 Stimulating the Senses and Imagination

I helped set up learning areas with a variety of open-ended materials such as sensory trays, natural objects, loose parts, and art resources. These encouraged children to explore, create, and use their imagination, supporting the EYLF outcomes for confident and involved learners.

👫 Supporting Relationships and Social Play

I arranged group play spaces with small group table activities, dramatic play corners, and construction areas that encouraged cooperation and communication. This helped children build friendships and practice sharing, turn-taking, and problem-solving (Early Childhood Australia [ECA], 2016).

Activities and Learning Experiences

Throughout my placement, I actively participated in planning and supporting a variety of activities and learning experiences that aligned with children’s interests, developmental needs, and the EYLF outcomes.

🎨 Art and Creative Expression

I set up open-ended art experiences using paints, natural materials, and collage items. These activities encouraged children to express their ideas, make choices, and build fine motor skills. Children enjoyed mixing colors, creating imaginative drawings, and sharing their work with peers.

🧩 Problem-Solving and Cognitive Play

I facilitated experiences such as puzzles, matching games, and building blocks to support children’s thinking and reasoning skills. I encouraged children to work together and ask questions, promoting collaborative learning and problem-solving.

📚 Language and Literacy

During group times, I supported educators by reading picture books, singing songs, and engaging children in storytelling. I also participated in small group book experiences, helping children develop vocabulary, listening skills, and a love of reading.

🌿 Nature and Sensory Exploration

I helped organise outdoor experiences like gardening, nature walks, and water play. These experiences allowed children to explore the natural world, develop their senses, and learn about sustainability through hands-on interactions.

👫 Social and Emotional Development

I led simple group games and role-play scenarios that promoted cooperation, empathy, and relationship-building. I also modeled and supported children in resolving conflicts and recognizing emotions in themselves and others.

🔢 Numeracy and Early Mathematics

Through experiences like sorting colored beads, counting activities, and using measuring tools in sand play, I helped children engage with early numeracy concepts in fun and meaningful ways.

Activity

🤖 Shape Matching Robot Activity

Today, I planned a shape-matching activity where I cut out different shapes and made a robot with missing parts. Children had to match and paste the correct shapes onto the robot. I guided them by asking questions like, “Where does this triangle go?”

I observed that children were engaged, used shape recognition, and developed fine motor skills while working together. They also used language to name shapes and talk about where they belonged.

EYLF Learning Outcomes:

Outcome 4 – Children are confident and involved learners

  • Developed problem-solving and matching skills

  • Used curiosity and reasoning to complete the task

Outcome 5 – Children are effective communicators

  • Used language to describe shapes

  • Recognised and worked with pattern systems
