Day 14: Holistic Development and Dispositions

I paid close attention to children's social, emotional, cognitive, and physical development. I supported a child in managing frustration during a group puzzle activity and noticed their persistence a key learning disposition. I documented this as evidence of resilience and self-regulation. I’m learning to see how every small moment contributes to holistic development.

Cultivating Positive Dispositions

 Fostering Curiosity

Curiosity is a fundamental aspect of children's learning and development. Encouraging curiosity leads to active engagement and a love of learning.

Activity: Exploration Stations

  • Objective: To encourage children to explore new materials and ideas.

  • How I Cultivate Curiosity: I set up different exploration stations with a variety of hands-on materials like puzzles, nature items, and sensory bins. I encourage children to ask questions and explore the materials freely (Vygotsky, 1978).

  • Reflection: I see children become curious about what they find at the stations. For instance, one child might be fascinated by a bin of sand, while another might be intrigued by a puzzle. I engage with them by asking questions like, "What do you think this feels like?" or "How can we put this puzzle together?" This prompts them to think critically and fosters their natural curiosity.

Learning Through Play and Exploration

Learning Through Play and Exploration is a powerful approach to early childhood development. It allows children to learn in a natural, enjoyable, and meaningful way, fostering their cognitive, emotional, social, and physical growth (Vygotsky, 1978). Here's how I implement this approach during my placement:

Creating a Stimulating Environment

A rich environment encourages children to explore, experiment, and engage in different types of play.

How I Implement This:

  • I ensure that the learning spaces are filled with a variety of materials, such as sensory bins, blocks, art supplies, books, and outdoor equipment. These materials are not only safe but also designed to spark curiosity and imagination.

  • For example, I set up a science corner with magnifying glasses, leaves, rocks, and insects for children to explore nature. This hands-on experience ignites their curiosity and allows them to engage in discovery-based learning.

Reflection:

The children become excited as they engage with the materials. They ask questions like, “What happens when we mix the paint colors?” or “What does this bug do?” I notice their problem-solving skills develop as they figure out how things work.

Activity

🐰 Craft Bunny Making – A Creative and Social Experience

Today, I planned and facilitated a bunny-making craft activity using paper, cotton balls, glue, and crayons. I guided the children to follow simple steps like cutting, gluing, and decorating. The children were excited to personalize their bunnies, sharing ideas and materials with each other. I observed their creativity, fine motor skills, and social interaction as they worked together and expressed pride in their finished bunnies.
